Using an Infrared Forehead Thermometer: Checks Before You Measure
Start with the instructions for your exact thermometer. A forehead measurement, an ear measurement and an object-temperature measurement are different uses; a mode that works for one should not be assumed to work for another.
Identify the device and mode
Check the model on the device, then find its manual. OUSON lists the BSX976 infrared thermometer and Thermo Vision JPD-FR301 separately. Use the instructions supplied with the model you own, including the intended measurement site and age restrictions.
Before measuring a person's temperature, confirm the appropriate body-measurement mode. Do not compare an object-mode result with a body-mode result as if they were the same measurement.
Check the setup
- Use the thermometer away from direct sunlight, draughts and strong heat sources.
- Allow it to adjust to the room as instructed in its manual.
- Keep the forehead clean, dry and uncovered.
- Hold the sensor at the angle and distance specified for that model; keep the person still.
- Keep the sensor clean and dry, and avoid touching it.
The FDA's non-contact infrared thermometer guidance explains how environment, positioning and preparation can affect a measurement. There is no single measurement distance that applies to every model.
If a result surprises you
Check that you used the intended mode and followed the setup instructions. Record the value, unit, measurement site and time so you can explain exactly what you measured. If you repeat a reading, retain the original instead of reporting only the number you prefer.
Temperature is one piece of information about how a person is doing. Seek medical advice if they are unwell or you are concerned, even when a device reading does not appear high. Follow age-specific advice from a healthcare professional for babies and children.
Keep the instructions with the device
Save the correct model guide where another caregiver can find it. The same guide should be used for cleaning, storage, batteries and error messages. Do not improvise a cleaning liquid or immerse the thermometer unless its instructions explicitly permit it.
